Workshop Overview
Risk management is a core duty for critical infrastructures that are operated by utility providers. Despite the existence of numerous risk assessment tools to support utility providers in estimating the nature and impact of possible incidents, risk management till now is mostly a matter of best-practice approaches. Due to the increasing interconnection and interdependency of utility providers and their respective critical infrastructures (ICT networks, SCADA systems, utility networks, etc.) standard risk assessment methodologies are struggling to cope with the constantly evolving world of threats.
In this workshop, hosted by the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, new approaches towards the security and risk assessment for utility providers will be presented. These approaches have been developed in the course of current research activities of three major European Union projects in the FP7 and the CIPS programme; HyRiM, SPARKS and MEDUSA. These projects are covering specific issues in connection with utility providers and utility networks in general, and specifically in areas of smart grids and a port’s supply chain. Therein, a major focus is laid on the identification and assessment of cascading effects, as well as the assessment and mitigation of cyber-attacks in utility networks and smart grids.
